Mamariga Pyrenean Mastiff started breeding this gorgeous dog breed in 2008. But our affection and admiration for these gentle giants dates back decades.
Mamariga Pyrenean Mastiff is located on a 2,800 sq. m. plot within the municipal boundaries of Ciudad Rodrigo  (Salamanca),  and it is here where we have our family dog breeding kennels, to try to help improve the beauty and biotype of our beloved breed.

 

The name of our grounds and at the same time our breeders’ affix, MAMARIGA, is a reminder of the fishermen’s district in the village of Santurce (Vizcaya), which bears the same name. The village where I was born, lived 30 years of my life and saw a Pyrenean Mastiff for the first time.
One Sunday, when I would be about 8 years old, more or less, on one of those customary Sunday morning walks that my father used to like taking with my loyal company around Santurce fishing port, we saw a large fishing vessel pull into the harbour. A large black and white dog, astride the bow of the boat caught our eye. I told my father that I would love to see it up close and if possible, stroke it and no sooner said than done.

We waited for them to unload the catch and when the skipper disembarked with his big dog, after my father had a short chat with him, I was able to stroke and cuddle it as much as I wanted. He remarked that a cousin of his from Navarre had given him the dog and that it was a Pyrenean mountain dog.
That day I said to myself that this would be the breed of dog that would some day be part of my life. I can still remember how it licked me and tumbled me over to this day.

I had to wait 30 years as I have always been aware that this breed needs plenty of space to be able to live with dignity. Not without having been to numerous dog shows for years, just as a spectator, in order to continue enjoying their beauty.
In 2008, after having emigrated from my birthplace and always with Pyrenean Mastiff in mind, jointly with my wife and my children I decided the time had come to introduce a Pyrenean giant into our lives.

Today, in our grounds (Mamariga) we have 9 adorable Pyrenean Mastiff, 5 females and 4 males. We breed selectively, for which we travel thousands of kilometres over the year to be able to personally view the best Pyrenean Mastiff sires and to decide which would be the most suitable for one of our reproducing females for future litters. Always aiming for our future puppies to comply to the utmost with the breed standard.

We continue going to shows, both at home and abroad. And irrespective of whether the results are good or bad, we are delighted to have their company.

You should know that they are highly intelligent animals, excellent guard dogs and totally loyal to their family, especially with children, if they form part of it.
